Thursday Random 10

Filed under: Random — by Lucy @ 2:44 pm

Because I haven’t done one in a while:

  1. Beachcombing – Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris
  2. Happy Phantom – Tori Amos
  3. Tears – Teenage Fanclub
  4. I Don’t Feel Like Dancing – Scissor Sisters (I saw them live at Wembley Arena last weekend – they were fabulous)
  5. Sylvia Plath – Ryan Adams
  6. The Hives Are The Law, You Are Crime – The Hives
  7. Fairy Tale of New York – The Pogues (how seasonally appropriate!)
  8. I Hope – Dixie Chicks
  9. I Think I’m In Love – Kiera Lee
  10. High Fidelity – Elvis Costello

Good – nothing too embarrassing there!

  1. wah–Scissor Sisters! lurve them. for whatever bizarre reason, they’re practically unknown over here.

heh, i was listening to that Pogues tune not long ago as well.

  2. Re: Scissor sisters, it’s hard to say. I may be way off, but I think the UK is generally a bit more accepting of openly gay artists- possibly due to fewer religious nutjobs. I’ve heard that SS are quite popular in New York – is that true?

  3. sort of. i mean, they play at clubs and such. it’s still nothing like the UK or Europe.

yeah, our Puritanical heritage again, or some damn thing. i still remember the first time i saw the -real- “Relax” (Frankie Goes to Hollwood) video. we didn’t get that over here, at the time…

and i don’t think anyone on your side of the pond would’ve gotten the whole Janet Jackson flap, right? (gasp! a microsecond glimpse of a NIPPLE!!)

yeah, we’re pretty fucked up, over here. but you begin to see perhaps why some of us get more het up over the puritanism than others. or, well, and as Veronica was just talking about, it’s also a generational thing (i.e. I AM OLD AND DECREPIT, OKAY); between the Net and a few other things, there really has been a huge shift wrt pr0n availability in the past very few years.

otoh, i still maintain it’s a -very- thin layer over all the much much older forms of hegemonic sexism and other oppressions (i am developing a serious allergy to the word “patriarchy”). which is -why- it ends up expressed in the toxic ways that it does. same old shit in a shiny cover.

so, you adapt along with the shifting circumstances; otoh, i also am very leery of the -other- ways of doing the same old shit in a different guise–i.e. the ways in which a lot of anti-pr0n activism that i’ve seen it dovetails–i do not say is always synonymous with–reactionary, puritanical, authoritarian impulses.

egh, sorry, i just remembered this is actually the -fun- thread, and here i go back into the Eternal…

yes, Scissor Sisters are kickass. i could’ve seen ’em live last time they were here, but didn’t make it. seriously, it was like one night at a dance club. don’t they play to sold-out stadiums Over There?

also, we don’t seem to appreciate Goldfrapp, so it may not be just homophobia, sex-neg, etc; it may also just be that we have no taste.

  4. …crap, now i sound like fucking Twisty.

what i meant to say was:

“gee, I really like Goldfrapp, and sure wish she was better known over here!”

  5. ‘egh, sorry, i just remembered this is actually the -fun- thread, and here i go back into the Eternal…’

Heh. I think there should be a new version of Godwin’s law which says that any thread on any feminist blog anwyhere will eventually turn into a discussion on porn. ‘Dworkin’s Law?’

Yes, scissor sisters play pretty big venues over here. Not quite stadiums (stadia?) yet, but the next level down – large arenas.

Agree on Goldfrapp – their last album was amazing.
