Enough is Enough

Filed under: Feminism — by Lucy @ 8:59 pm

OK, I’m done.

When a supposedly left-wing feminist blogger links approvingly to an article in the Daily Mail – possibly the most virulently misogynist paper in the world – it’s a sign that I’ve reached my limit. When the said article is one blaming feminism for the evils of modern society, it’s a sign that I’ve gone beyond my limit and back round the other side.

I kept reading Twisty even after the blowjob debacle, simply because she’s such a fantastic writer. However I just can’t keep linking to someone who cites the Daily Fucking Mail to back up her arguments.

So bye Twisty. I’m sure she won’t give a shit that I’m unlinking her, but hey, it’ll make me feel better.

  1. We’ve all been there. 😉

I think I liked her better at the old site. Anyhow her blog is now overrun by fans who will shoot you down if you disagree. (Not that I’ve dared.) This makes reading the comment thread rather boring reading lately.

  2. Mmmm yes, I have stopped visiting Twisty so often, so I was not aware of this Daily Mail episode. It has been more because of her Army of friends seem to have taken on an energy of their own. It is Ok to have friends and supporters, but I find it a bit off-putting. Somewhat false?

  3. Re her fans – that’s why I didn’t link to the post in quesiton. I don’t want her cheerleaders coming here and attacking me.

LB – the post I’m referring to is one in which she attacked the Spice Girls. She linked to an article from the Daily Mail blaming ‘girl power’, and by extension feminism, for the downfall of society (or something along those lines). I just can’t stomach the idea of a feminist agreeing with a right-wing anti-feminist.

  5. Crikey, I see what you mean! The Daily Mail in all its feminist bashing glory!!

  6. The only time I have ever referred to The Daily Mail in blogging history has been in retort to their anti-feminist beliefs.

That newspaper may aswell be entitled: middle-class, white men look after themselves once again.

Less catchy I’ll admit, but far more truthful to the consumer.

  7. I didn’t link here, just going down the list on WW’s blogroll to see who I’ve missed. I didn’t get that Twisty agreeing with this person. I think you might want a re-read.

And hmmm. Seems like all the posters here agree with you. All the blogs collect their communities seems to me and there will be some aspect of what the blog owner puts out there that they agree with. I was drawn to IBTP for two reasons: I’m an older feminist, and what she says most often is the closest to 60s and 70s feminism, the original radical feminism. I also like Heart, and BB for the same reasons, and genderberg, the same. But I disagree many times both with other bloggers on those blogs and with the blog owner. I believe in fact I’m the only regular (that I’ve noted in the time I’ve been posting) that Twisty’s told off twice. We aren’t clones or sycophants. Not there, not here either I bet.

  9. Thanks Pony. I agree that blogs do tend to attract people who agree with the blogger’s point of view. This is inevitable, particularly with someone like Twisty who writes so well. I’m really sorry if I implied that all her commenters are sycophants and clones!

My main problem at the moment is the fact that she linked to a very right wing newspaper, and that the article she linked to was actually blaming feminism for the problems of society. Some of the language she uses is also quite anti-woman (‘sexbot’ etc). I just feel that as feminists we should be blaming women as little as possible.

Clearly Twisty can write what she likes – it’s her blog. I’d just prefer not to link to her any more. I may change my mind in future.

Thanks for stopping by (and glad you like the blog name!)
